Microtomes are precision-engineered with a solid one-piece metal base and enclosed in a polycarbonate housing. The specimen arm has a 70mm vertical stroke and a 40mm horizontal extension. Depending on what model is ordered, the coarse advance handwheel is turned in either a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction to provide forward movement of the specimen arm. The fine advance handwheel is counterbalanced for smooth rotation and has positive locking in any position. A debris protector shields internal mechanisms. Powerful cross roller bearing guideways provide specimen arm stability. Fine advance feed ranges are from 0.5-2.0µm in 0.5µm increments, 2-10µm in 1µm increments, 10-20µm in 2µm increments, and 20-60µm in 5µm increments.
Three microtome types are available: non-retracting rotary, retracting rotary, and retracting electronic. The non-retracting rotary microtome can be used to section paraffin-embedded biological specimens or industrial materials.
The retracting rotary microtome can be used to section paraffin- or plastic-embedded specimens or industrial materials. During upstroke, the specimen arm is mechanically retracted to prevent damaging contact with knife-edge. This reduces the accumulation of debris on the back edge of the knife and prolongs the sharpness of the cutting surface. Additional features include an integrated section counter with LCD readout for the number of rotations of the fine advance handwheel, and an autotrim feature that accelerates trimming and reduces repetitive motions. This model provides three preset positions for controlled coarse advance of 10µm, 20µm, and 30µm.
The retracting electronic microtome can be used to section paraffin- or plastic-embedded specimens, hard specimens such as mineralized bone, or industrial materials. This model includes the option of a motor-driven cutting stroke. A detached hand pad provides the choice of sectioning speed, mode of operation, start and stop functions, and can be programmed to imitate the user's normal cutting motions. Foot pedal option allows hands-free operation. Activating the readily accessible emergency stop button provides an extra measure of safety by halting the specimen arm immediately and shutting down the motor.
