Microincinerator sterilizes metal inoculating loops and needles quickly without using an open flame, eliminating the aerosolizing of microorganisms. Sterilization occurs via infrared heat at a temperature of 815°C (1500°F). Loops and needles are sterilized within 5-7 seconds; there is no need to wait for the metal to glow red. Infrared heat is safer than a Bunsen burner as it requires no gas. The heating element is protected by a stainless steel cowl and a cast aluminum tripod base with suction cup feet to stabilize the unit. To reduce hand fatigue, the unit can be adjusted to five different positions in 8° increments (-8 to 32°).
