Each of these random-access, real-time, modular PCR processing units can test 16 different protocols simultaneously. Up to six units can be connected into one system allowing 96 different protocols to be run at once. Every site of the unit is calibrated optically and thermally to perform the same when programmed to run identical protocols. Systems can optimize PCR denaturation, annealing and extension temperatures, and times in a single run. Average time to results is 20-40 minutes, less than half the time of a 96-well plate instrument. Two SmartCycler units can process an equal or greater number of samples per day than a 96-well instrument. Previous runs can be viewed and analyzed, and results can be printed while the unit is still in use. A new run can always be created and started while other runs are still in progress.
The random access feature accommodates variable amplicon lengths, cycling times, and assay design. There is no need for universal cycling conditions. Shorter cycling times extend the life of Taq polymerase and hybridization probes. Random access and shorter cycling times also reduce optimization from weeks to hours, especially for multiplex applications. The heavy-duty, airline-safe transport case and laptop configuration are ideal for field work. The optical system has no moving parts or bulbs that could be damaged during transport. Installation is plug-and-play and system expansion only requires an additional USB connection. The ready-to-use format of OmniMix* HS lyophilized universal PCR reagent bead simplifies assay preparation while adding flexibility. It contains all of the necessary reagents for PCR, except primers and probe, or intercalating dye. SmartMix HM is a premium master mix that provides all the necessary reagents to perform PCR in a stable, easy-to-use bead format. It is optimized for single target and multiplexed real-time PCR reactions.
