The FE-2 workstation works in conjunction with any standard, upright microscope to provide a complete system for the collection, processing, and analysis of ova and parasites. The unit allows technologists to automatically and consistently aspirate evenly mixed fecal parasite/concentrate samples. Simply press the sample button to aspirate (through the dual aspirator probe), re-suspend, and present samples within dual flow cells (viewing chambers) for analysis. The sample entering the bottom flow cell is automatically stained while the sample entering the top flow cell remains unstained.

The dual flow cells are constructed of seamless, optical-quality glass and are housed within the system’s unique optical slide assembly (OSA). The OSA is connected to the workstation’s console and aspirator probe by medical-grade tubing. It clips onto the stage of any microscope. The OSA accommodates all forms of microscopy including bright field, polarized light, and phase contrast.

While the sample is being read, the operator can press the sample button again to jog another portion of that sample into view for further analysis. This “jogging” feature can be used twice per sample. After the samples are read, the operator may purge them and aspirate a new sample for analysis.

This system provides lower operating costs by eliminating the need for consumables such as pipets, slides, and coverslips. It minimizes waste disposal and results in fewer repeat tests, reducing the cost of direct labor. The system is fully upgradeable, as well as easy to use. Most technologists reach operating proficiency within 100 samples, resulting in improved quality control. The automated, closed-environment system also enhances worksite safety by reducing operator exposure to biohazardous materials.
