Red crystalline solid.A cationic, cell-permeable, voltage-sensitive, lipophilic, and fluorescent carbocyanine dye that is used as a membrane potential probe. Selectively stains mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum. Shown to be a photosensitizer that specifically photodamages microtubules. Also useful as an electron transport inhibitor and as a probe for studying drug accumulation in multidrug-resistant cells.
