Supplied as a solution in ethanol.A major aldehydic product formed by peroxidation of omega-6-unsaturated fatty acids. Regarded as a specific marker of lipid peroxidation. Inhibits proliferation and induces differentiation of HL-60 human leukemic cells. Also induces cell death in murine alveolar macrophages. An inhibitor of state 3 respiration at micromolar levels. Causes a transient increase in cytosolic Ca²⁺ and irreversibly inhibits Na⁺, K⁺-ATPase activity (IC₅₀=120µM).
