Desferrioxamine Mesylate; DFMO

Off-white solid.Parenteral iron chelating agent. Commonly used as chelator of ferric iron in disorders of iron overload. Protects against dopamine-induced cell death. Shown to interfere with hydroxyl radical formation. Shows antiproliferative effects on the vascular smooth muscle cells in vitro and in vivo. Can also inhibit the oxidative chemistry of peroxynitrite by reaction of the hydroxamic moieties with trans-peroxynitrous acid.
