Light yellow liquid.An effective antioxidant. Scavenges hypochlorous acid, peroxyl, superoxide, hydroxyl and nitric oxide radicals. Also exhibits pro-oxidant properties, as demonstrated by its ability to reduce iron ions and to generate reactive sulfur-containing radicals that can damage certain proteins, such as alpha₁-antiproteinase and creatine kinase. DHLA has recently been shown to inhibit apoptosis in rat thymocytes induced by methylprednisolone and etoposide.
