Use to study protein structure and functions, for anchoring proteins to solid supports, or to prepare immunogens, immunotoxins, and other conjugated protein reagents. Cross-linkers contain reactive ends that create chemical bonds between two or more molecules. Agents with a longer arm space may be used where two target groups are far apart, while short arm spaces are better suited for intra-molecular cross-linking.

If the two reactive ends are identical they are homobifunctional. These molecules can be used in one-step reactions and have the tendency to result in self-conjugation, polymerization, and intracellular cross-linking. If the two ends are different, they are heterobifunctional. These molecules are used in two-step sequential reactions, where the least labile reactive end reacts first. Heterobifunctional agents allow researchers to minimize undesirable intra-molecular cross reactions and polymerization. Photoreactive agents become active with exposure to UV light and bind nonspecifically with neighboring molecules. These reagents are suitable for labeling molecules that do not contain easily reactable functional groups.
