CsTFA solution is a strong chaotrope used for separation and purification of nucleic acids that inhibits ribonucleases and also promotes the hydration and solubilization of nucleic acids and proteins. This feature, combined with the fact that nucleic acids have relatively low bouyant densities in CsTFA, means that RNA can be banded isopycnically in CsTFA gradients.
