The PEDI-RATE system is designed to provide a safe and simple method for conducting Westergren ESR determinations on children, the elderly, or in any instance where low volumes of blood are obtained.

The system includes a polystyrene pipet that is graduated from 0 to 170mm, and features a fibrous plug located at the zero mark. The plug acts as a self-sealing aerosol barrier to prevent hazardous substances from escaping the pipet. Also included is a polypropylene vial which features a self-sealing stopper that is easily pierced with a transfer pipet. The vial is supplied prefilled with 0.08mL of 3.8% trisodium citrate diluent. To conduct the test, 0.32mL of EDTA-treated blood is added to the vial and mixed. The pipet is then inserted into the vial, causing blood to rise to the zero mark within the pipet. After 50 minutes, the numerical results are available directly from the imprinted scale on the pipet.

The PEDI-RATE system is comprised of shatter-proof plastic components to eliminate splashing, spraying, and aerosol hazards. The closed system design allows for highly accurate, reproducible results.
