The SEDIGREN system offers a unique approach to conducting Westergren ESR determinations. The polystyrene SEDIGREN pipet is graduated from 0 to 160mm, and features a piston inside the pipet which assists blood draw up to the zero mark with its syringe-like action. This method eliminates the risk of user error, as well as aerosol and air bubble formation. The polypropylene SEDIGREN vial features a removable stopper that is easily pierced with a transfer pipet. The vial is prefilled with 0.25mL of 3.8% trisodium citrate diluent.

To conduct the ESR test, add 1mL of EDTA-treated blood into the vial and mix contents. The pipet is then inserted through the stopper, and the piston is drawn out to induce blood flow up to the pipet's zero mark. The piston may be snapped off at a prescored mark to act as a safety plug. After 60 minutes, the test results may be read in millimeters directly from the imprinted scale on the pipet.
