Tilting-type gauge features a mercury self-leveling device for automatic zeroing. The top of the reference (center) capillary is in precise horizontal alignment with the top of the closed (left) capillary and the zero point on the scale when the gauge is in the reading (vertical) position. Mercury, after rising in the reference capillary, overflows at the zero point and falls into the built-in trap. When the gauge is tilted, the entrapped mercury returns to the reservoir at the right.
