Extrelut columns are designed as solid phase replacements for traditional liquid-liquid extractions done with a separatory funnel. Columns contain specially processed wide-pore diatomaceous earth, a chemically inert matrix for use within a pH range of 1-13. After the sample is pH adjusted or salt is added (as for salting out of the sample) and applied to the column, the matrix acts as a holder for the sample. Next, an immiscible organic solvent is passed through the column to extract the desired components, which are subsequently analyzed.
