Adjustable plungers, or flow adapters, have two principle uses in low-pressure chromatography column applications. They are used when a column cannot or should not be completely filled with media and no space at the top of the packing is required, and they are also frequently used in ascending flow chromatography.

In size exclusion or other conventional chromatography applications, adjustable plungers enable users to lower the top of the fluid path to a level even with that of the selected media. Ascending flow chromatography can minimize bed compression and yield superior performance for larger columns. An adjustable plunger can be utilized if the column is completely filled or not, due to its convenience in this application. If extreme adjustment of column length is required, two plungers can be used on a single column. With one positioned on top and the other on the bottom, the available adjustment length is doubled.

All aqueous plungers have polypropylene endplates and nylon bed supports, and are suitable for use with most aqueous solutions, including acids, bases, and salts. Fluoropolymer resin is the only wetted material in the organic plunger, making them suitable for use with any chromatographic solvent.
