System automatically separates and stains proteins under controlled power and temperature conditions. User can program and store nine separation protocols of nine steps each, and nine staining protocols of 20 steps each. This multi-step programming capability allows gels to be prerun, loaded, and run automatically. Gel temperature can be regulated through the Peltier-controlled support bed. The system assures reproducibility of automated protein and nucleic acid electrophoresis with quality-tested precast gels, buffer strips, and staining kits.
System consists of a separation control unit for system control and electrophoresis, and a development unit for gel staining. The separation control unit features a 31-key keyboard with audible tones, 40-digit alphanumeric LCD, and four LEDs for status information. It also includes an audible alarm that sounds at the end of separation, lithium battery backup, short-circuit protection, and lid power interlock. Electrophoresis is performed on a thermostatic plate capable of maintaining temperatures accurately from 0 to 70°C (32 to 158°F). Controlled parameters include temperature, voltage, current, power, and volt-hours. The stainless steel development unit is capable of processing two gels simultaneously at temperatures from ambient to 50°C (122°F).
