The sample is evaporated and condensed under controlled conditions, with measurements of the temperatures at which various percentages are recovered and/or the percentages recovered at specified temperatures. Units feature fully insulated condenser and heater units with stepless electronic control, flask support platform, viewing window, and rack and pinion heater-elevation mechanism with push-turn control knob.

Distillation apparatus are suitable for groups 0, 1, 2, and 3: motor and aviation gasolines, aviation turbine fuels, naphthas, kerosenes, distillate fuels, natural gasoline, liquid hydrocarbon mixtures, and other petroleum products. The 1000W heater unit and condenser are stainless steel.

Group 4 apparatus are additionally suitable for testing Grade No. 2 fuel oil, Grade No. 2-D diesel fuel oil, gas oils, and other distillates requiring condenser bath temperatures up to 60°C (140°F). Group 4 units feature a 300W copper immersion condenser heater.
