OptiCell systems are unique cell culture formats designed to accommodate the full range of cell culture activities. Growing, monitoring, and transporting cells can be accomplished through the use of a device with the footprint of a standard microtiter plate.

Each device combines two parallel gas-permeable, cell culture-treated polystyrene membranes attached to a standard microtiter plate-sized frame. Each side has a growth area of 50cm², for a combined total growth area of 100cm². The membranes are 75µm thick and are positioned 2mm apart. The thin profile of each device maximizes incubator space and reduces media consumption. The recommended media/cell fill volume is 10mL for the OptiCell 1100 system and 30mL for the OptiCell MAX 2100 system. Two resealing access ports provide a closed growth environment with sterile fluid path, reducing contamination risk. Devices are barcoded for easy tracking and automation handling. Applications for the OptiCell systems include transportation of live cells, short-term freezing and thawing of cells, cell imaging and staining, and transfection. The OptiCell MAX 2100 system may also be used in hybridoma antibody production.

Several accessories are also available separately for use with the OptiCell systems. The OptiMag cell separation kit permits biomagnetic cell separation. OptiCell mailers are breathable, absorbent sleeves with cardboard mailers, and must be used with an appropriate shipping envelope. The OptiCell rack holds 20 OptiCell 1100 chambers, or 10 OptiCell MAX 2100 chambers. OptiCell tips are stainless steel, 18 gauge, sterile, and nonpyrogenic blunt tips. These tips fit standard syringes and are designed for single use only. The OptiCell knife can be used to remove growth membranes from the frame for sectioning. Knives are individually wrapped and sterile, and may be autoclaved up to three times.
